Frequently asked questions about VPNs
What is a VPN, in practice?
A VPN (virtual private network) is a tool that creates a “secure tunnel” between your device (phone, computer, tablet, TV…) and the internet.
It encrypts your data and hides your IP address, making it harder for third parties (public Wi-Fi, your internet provider, websites, hackers) to see what you do online or link it directly to you.
What is a VPN actually useful for, for me?
A VPN is above all there to protect your connection and your privacy.
In everyday life, it's useful for securing your connections on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, transport, shared workplaces).
It also helps limit ad tracking and data collection on your browsing, access geographically restricted content (streaming catalogs, certain TV channels or sites blocked in a given country), and better protect your exchanges if you work remotely or handle sensitive files from a distance.
Is using a VPN legal?
In most countries, using a VPN is legal.
What is prohibited are illegal activities (piracy, distributing protected content, cyberharassment, selling illicit goods, etc.), even when carried out through a VPN.
A VPN is designed first and foremost as a tool to protect your connection, your privacy and your data — not as permission to break the law.
Free VPN or paid VPN?
A free VPN can do the job for occasional use, but it often comes with limits: fewer servers, reduced speeds, data that's frequently logged or used for advertising, and sometimes a weaker level of protection.
A serious paid VPN funds a real infrastructure: more country choices, better stability, better speed, advanced encryption and a clearer privacy policy.
It's generally the recommended choice if you want to protect your data, your privacy and your everyday activities (public Wi-Fi, streaming, remote work, etc.) over the long term.
Why do VPN comparisons contradict each other?
VPN comparisons don't all use the same criteria: some focus mainly on price or speed, others on streaming, privacy or ease of use.
Many are also affiliate sites that highlight the services they have the best deals with.
The result: rankings can vary enormously, and it's hard to know which VPN really fits your usage.
QuizVPN doesn't look for the “best VPN overall”, but the one that matches the way you live online: through 10 simple questions about your habits, we point you toward a VPN suited to your profile.
Does QuizVPN record my answers?
No. We don't collect or store your individual answers: they're used only to suggest a VPN suited to your usage, and they aren't linked to your identity.
Everything is handled in your browser, with no personally identifiable profile created.
